In trying to fix our problems, are we actually just rearranging them? For every product advertised to fix something in your home, there is its shadow- the byproduct you might not suspect. Every home is a system, and all the parts interact through physics, chemistry, and microbiology- but since we can’t predict the specific combination of products in your home, we can’t predict their interactions. But there are ways to buy, and even build, in a less chaotic way, that gives us more control over the hazards we face every day.

01;02;01;25 Okay, so The interesting thing
01;02;04;18 about the indoor environment
01;02;06;04 "is that there are lots and lots of products out there"
01;02;08;25 "to improve the indoor environment."
01;02;10;13 "There's almost a truism in indoor air"
01;02;12;25 "that you shouldn't add anything to indoor air,"
01;02;15;09 "and yet there are so many products that do just that."
01;02;18;10 "In some cases we only have a little bit"
01;02;20;27 "of direct evidence of their harm."
01;02;22;21 "In other cases, we have a lot of evidence."
01;02;24;15 "People do these things because they think it's good"
01;02;27;02 "or because it makes them feel better"
01;02;29;02 "and it actually potentially causes harm."
01;02;32;02 "- We mocked up an entire home almost"
01;02;34;17 in one of our large chambers
01;02;35;28 in the back of our research lab.
01;02;38;00 "So we studied washing machines, we studied dishwashers,"
01;02;40;27 we mocked up a shower.
01;02;42;03 "We even had a bathtub that would fill up"
01;02;44;18 "and we had a human simulating puppet"
01;02;47;03 "kind of simulating a washing event"
01;02;49;12 "of somebody sitting in a bathtub."
01;02;51;11 "We studied what happens when you use"
01;02;53;07 "different consumer products in your home,"
01;02;56;04 "when you have an ozone source in the home."
01;02;58;14 "And it was one of the first studies that showed"
01;03;00;27 "how different chemicals released from consumer products"
01;03;03;21 "interact with ozone and form bursts of particles in the air,"
01;03;08;06 "it really opened our eyes to the amount of chemistry"
01;03;10;20 that can actually occur
01;03;12;08 "when you have two things coming together in a home,"
01;03;15;20 "somebody using an air freshener, a solid air freshener"
01;03;20;02 or a spray air freshener,
01;03;21;24 "or even somebody wearing a nice scented perfume"
01;03;25;08 "in the presence of an ozone source inside of the home,"
01;03;29;12 Ozone is part of pollution.
01;03;31;09 Just part of our everyday lives.
01;03;33;10 "Recent discoveries show that we can actually carry ozone"
01;03;36;11 "around in our skin oil and off gas it somewhere else."
01;03;40;05 "One place we're exposed to a lot of it"
01;03;42;04 is flying at 35,000 feet
01;03;44;07 "where most single aisle planes are exposing you"
01;03;46;21 "to ozone levels well above those in a polluted city."
01;03;49;26 "We still wear N95 face masks when we fly"
01;03;52;12 "because first of all, we live in an ocean of air"
01;03;54;25 "and it gets gross, but also we monitor carbon dioxide"
01;03;58;17 "when we travel as a proxy for all the other stuff"
01;04;01;18 "coming out of the people around us."
01;04;03;20 "We see sky high levels of breath byproduct"
01;04;06;14 "when we're sitting on the tarmac,"
01;04;08;00 "and it's not what I'd call healthy."
01;04;09;27 "Even when the ventilation kicks back on."
01;04;12;08 "Even a marvel of technology like an aircraft"
01;04;15;02 "can be better tuned for performance."
01;04;19;05 "Building and owning performance tuned homes"
01;04;21;15 "sometimes to us, seems a little bit like an elite thing"
01;04;25;20 "and more and more people are working on the challenge"
01;04;28;06 "of making this stuff affordable for everyone."
01;04;32;03 "I'm about to introduce you to somebody"
01;04;33;21 "who is one of my favorite builders in the entire country,"
01;04;36;02 "Scott True from Dimora Homes, Bastrop, Texas."

01;04;40;11 "- With housing being difficult to afford,"
01;04;42;18 "how do we make high performance affordable?"
01;04;45;09 - It's a big challenge
01;04;46;14 "and one that I'm trying to figure out."
01;04;48;02 "I'm implementing a lot of different things"
01;04;50;22 "from homes that have higher budgets"
01;04;53;14 "and just trying to figure out which items"
01;04;56;13 "have the greatest impact, the most bang for your buck."
01;04;59;06 "But I also have to combine that with what are the skills"
01;05;02;03 "of the people building affordable homes?"
01;05;04;26 "It can seem simple, in some ways it is,"
01;05;09;07 "but I think the difficult thing is finding methods"
01;05;12;17 "that the local workers can and are willing to do."
01;05;16;08 "I mean, that goes for everything that we do."
01;05;18;24 "We've gotta find ways of building that can be done"
01;05;22;00 by these people that live here.
01;05;24;26 "- [Corbett] You may have heard we can skip"
01;05;26;11 "all that hard work and just get our homes 3D printed,"
01;05;29;11 "but remember, there are no silver bullets"
01;05;31;21 "and every product comes with byproducts."
01;05;35;13 "All right, Jorge, show us what you got."
01;05;37;12 "- So 3D printers are very popular."
01;05;39;05 "You can even buy them as toys for your kids,"
01;05;42;00 "and I find them very interesting."
01;05;44;12 "But we have to remember that when we bring these new"
01;05;47;25 "technologies and new toys into our home,"
01;05;50;00 "they produce things that we might not know."
01;05;52;16 "You can definitely smell the chemicals"
01;05;54;11 cuffing off a 3D printer.
01;05;55;28 As scientists, we're not saying
01;05;57;11 "that you can't have these things in your home."
01;05;59;06 "We're not saying you can't have candles,"
01;06;00;21 "you can't have products in your home."
01;06;03;00 "You can't have 3D printers in your home."
01;06;05;00 "When you bring contaminants such as these into your home,"
01;06;08;08 "you have to counterbalance it with ventilation,"
01;06;11;08 "again, as long as it's not polluted."
01;06;12;29 "So that could be opening a window"
01;06;14;16 "while you're doing these activities."
01;06;16;04 "That could be turning on a kitchen exhaust fan,"
01;06;18;29 "that could be putting a fan in a window"
01;06;21;05 "and taking that polluted air out of your home,"
01;06;23;19 "and that's really for your own benefit,"
01;06;25;26 "for your long-term health to do these things."
01;06;29;27 "- The fundamental basis for keeping the air clean"
01;06;34;12 "in our homes almost always comes back to a filter."
01;06;38;00 "It strains the air so that particles get removed."
01;06;41;14 "- Oftentimes people will ask me about air cleaners"
01;06;44;01 that will add things to the air,
01;06;45;26 "and sometimes they can actually add harmful chemical"
01;06;48;10 "compounds such as ozone that may be associated"
01;06;51;19 "with health effects in and of themselves,"
01;06;53;13 "and they might also not be effective."
01;06;55;24 You should never be present
01;06;57;08 "when there's an ozone generator of any kind on."
01;06;59;28 "You should probably never purchase an ozone generator"
01;07;02;18 for personal use in your house.
01;07;04;08 "They rarely do what they're supposed to do"
01;07;06;12 or what they claim to do.
01;07;09;02 "One of the most interesting cases that I was ever involved"
01;07;12;03 "with involved the guitar player in a very well-known"
01;07;14;28 rock and roll band.
01;07;16;16 His neighbor wanted to put in
01;07;18;21 "a helicopter pad on his property,"
01;07;20;17 and this particular person
01;07;21;24 "who called me had fought his neighbor."
01;07;24;13 "The neighbor hired somebody to spray skunk oil"
01;07;27;09 "into the individual who called me's car"
01;07;30;12 and house and property.
01;07;32;23 "This person spoke with his insurance company."
01;07;35;06 "The insurance company said, call this company."
01;07;37;23 "They'll come in and make the smell go away."
01;07;40;02 "Well, the company that came into his home set up,"
01;07;42;20 to my recollection, I believe,
01;07;43;27 "six commercial size ozone generators,"
01;07;48;03 switched them all on full blast
01;07;50;21 and forgot to tell the family
01;07;51;26 they shouldn't be in the house
01;07;53;04 "when these things were switched on."
01;07;54;16 "The person had a three-year-old daughter, a dog, a wife"
01;07;57;25 and himself who all became sick.
01;07;59;28 "It also harmed a lot of works of art."
01;08;02;02 "It degraded a lot of rubber in the house, rubber gaskets."
01;08;05;14 They had leaky water heaters
01;08;07;09 "because of ozone reacting with rubber."
01;08;10;14 "So it really damaged the house in my opinion, permanently."
01;08;16;10 Ozone does have a utility.
01;08;19;03 "We use it in the lab for for disinfecting things."
01;08;22;04 "It's used in some medical context for disinfection."
01;08;25;07 It's used in some swimming pools
01;08;26;28 "as an alternative to chlorine for disinfection."
01;08;29;24 It's that fresh scent.
01;08;31;01 We often associate it
01;08;32;16 "with like a thunderstorm on a mountain kind of thing."
01;08;34;26 "It smells good. I think most people think ozone smells good."
01;08;38;13 "The dark side or the problem is that every textile,"
01;08;41;17 "every rubber, every piece of plastic, a linoleum flooring,"
01;08;45;19 "everything indoors reacts with ozone,"
01;08;47;29 "and then you get this whole new chemical soup"
01;08;51;07 "and it's different in every house."
01;08;53;01 "And even if people do the right thing"
01;08;55;15 "and make sure there's no people around, ozone reacts"
01;08;58;11 "with all that stuff and forms other stuff,"
01;09;01;11 "which can last for a long, long time."
01;09;04;00 "- The chemistry in our buildings is very complex."
01;09;07;01 "If you're trying to change the air chemistry in a building,"
01;09;10;02 "you have to do it pretty quickly."
01;09;11;23 You have maybe a couple of hours
01;09;13;03 for that chemistry to occur.
01;09;14;25 "When we try to intentionally change the chemistry"
01;09;17;09 "in a space, we may get unexpected products,"
01;09;21;04 unexpected results,
01;09;22;23 or there may not be enough time
01;09;24;02 to realize a substantial effect.
01;09;25;27 "So it's actually a very challenging thing to do,"
01;09;28;08 "to intentionally control the chemistry"
01;09;30;26 "in an environment as complex as our indoor spaces."
01;09;33;15 That's really a hot topic
01;09;34;21 "that we need to study a little bit more."
01;09;37;25 "- There was this condo in downtown Toronto"
01;09;40;16 and we were monitoring
01;09;41;25 "the particle concentrations for a year,"
01;09;43;28 and every day at midnight,
01;09;46;02 "the concentration would start going up and up and up and up."
01;09;48;21 "You know, it would go up for a few hours"
01;09;50;08 "and then it would slowly start declining after that."
01;09;53;17 Every day like clockwork.
01;09;55;11 "And I came up with all these ideas, what it must be,"
01;09;58;22 but nothing really made sense.
01;10;00;06 And then it turns out
01;10;01;11 "it was this little essential oil diffuser."
01;10;02;27 The person ran it on a timer
01;10;04;28 "both to get the humidification benefit"
01;10;07;07 "as well as mainly the scent out of it."
01;10;09;27 "And it was creating these particle concentrations"
01;10;12;09 that I can only describe as like
01;10;13;20 "what you would have in a polluted city"
01;10;15;14 "every night while they were sleeping."
01;10;17;25 "And you know, that got us really interested"
01;10;19;26 in what are these things.
01;10;21;12 "And so essentially it's like a little ultrasonic humidifier,"
01;10;23;19 "very small, put a little bit of water in,"
01;10;26;02 "a little bit of your favorite essential oil."
01;10;28;03 "The oil itself causes a lot of particles to form."
01;10;31;06 "And then also the water we use, there's a bunch of minerals"
01;10;34;09 "and other things in it that end up as aerosol."
01;10;37;00 "People who live in places with hard water are familiar"
01;10;39;18 "that there's often kind of a little trail"
01;10;41;14 "of white powder near their humidifier,"
01;10;43;28 that's that same aerosol.
01;10;46;02 That got us really interested
01;10;47;18 "because we've all been in stores where it's clear"
01;10;50;09 "that something is being emitted into the air."
01;10;52;24 "So with a colleague, Mike Mack, who's in psychology,"
01;10;55;27 "we did a study where we had about 60 test subjects"
01;11;00;09 "and we exposed them either to very pure distilled water,"
01;11;03;15 "so almost no particle generation,"
01;11;05;22 "grape seed oil, to my nose unscented and lemon oil,"
01;11;08;20 which makes a very strong scent.
01;11;10;17 "And we looked at the concentrations in the space,"
01;11;13;02 "but what we were really interested in"
01;11;14;11 was the cognitive function.
01;11;15;28 "And to make a lot of science and a very long story short,"
01;11;19;03 "we found that exposure to the lemon essential oil"
01;11;22;06 "made people behave more impulsive."
01;11;24;21 "When there's a scent being emitted in a store,"
01;11;27;01 "I think that part of the reason for that"
01;11;28;26 "is to make people spend more money"
01;11;30;13 "and it's taking advantage of the same thing."
01;11;32;27 "- So some air cleaners might be attempting"
01;11;35;16 "to intentionally produce, you know,"
01;11;37;14 "very powerful oxidants like hydroxyl radical"
01;11;40;01 or hydrogen peroxide.
01;11;41;29 "And when I see air cleaners that are claiming"
01;11;44;21 "to produce these species, I like to ask myself,"
01;11;47;23 "if these air cleaners are so powerful,"
01;11;49;20 "do I want to exist in that space?"
01;11;52;06 "When that powerful chemistry is happening,"
01;11;54;18 "those oxidation reactions can happen inside our bodies"
01;11;58;18 "and contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress."
01;12;01;18 "The converse of that is if it's completely safe"
01;12;04;01 "and fine for you to be in the space,"
01;12;06;07 "then what is the mechanism of action"
01;12;08;01 "by which they're impacting the air quality"
01;12;11;11 in the space you're in?
01;12;12;24 "So I think that's like a simple question"
01;12;14;28 "that you should ask yourself if you're evaluating what kind"
01;12;17;12 "of air cleaner you should buy for what kind of environment."
01;12;20;09 Ionizers.
01;12;21;17 "So I could talk all day about ionizers."
01;12;24;06 "One of my first research projects was about ionizers"
01;12;27;10 "and that led to years of legal trouble and other things."
01;12;31;12 It's quiet.
01;12;32;10 They're very low energy compared
01;12;33;25 to something like a filter.
01;12;35;11 "You don't have a filter that you have to replace."
01;12;38;09 "The first problem is many of them are not that effective"
01;12;40;29 "because they don't move that much air."
01;12;42;24 "The second problem is some of the ways"
01;12;44;17 "we generate ions also generate ozone."
01;12;47;23 "And the third issue is that there are now"
01;12;50;02 "two large, well done studies that show when people"
01;12;54;05 "get exposed to ions, they have negative health outcomes,"
01;12;57;09 "particularly cardiological health outcomes."
01;13;01;04 "So ultraviolet lights again have been around for decades"
01;13;04;11 and they're used to sterilize.
01;13;06;24 "Almost every modern hospital has a very extensive UV system."
01;13;10;17 With COVID especially,
01;13;12;06 "you can buy a UV system for your house."
01;13;14;19 "UV light, if it's in the right wavelength range"
01;13;17;18 "or the wrong wave light range will emit ozone."
01;13;20;26 "And so you can have a UV light that's actually causing harm."
01;13;25;07 "- The disinfection of air itself requires a much different"
01;13;28;21 "design than a disinfection of a surface"
01;13;32;09 "like a cooling coil in an HVAC system."
01;13;34;27 "You need a smaller dose of ultraviolet light"
01;13;37;26 "to deactivate a static surface that's not moving."
01;13;41;04 "You can imagine if you have a lot of air moving"
01;13;42;23 "through an HVAC system, you have a lot less time,"
01;13;44;27 so you need a much bigger dose.
01;13;46;21 "And so in the past year there've been a couple of studies"
01;13;48;23 "that have shown that there may be some downsides to that."
01;13;52;03 "There are very few downsides to overdesigning filtration."
01;13;55;15 There's really not a risk
01;13;56;21 "of being like you filter the air too much."
01;13;59;12 "So that's why you often hear indoor air quality scientists"
01;14;02;13 "advocating for mechanical filtration."
01;14;04;24 "It's a pretty safe way of improving the air quality"
01;14;07;03 "in the space with very few downsides."
01;14;10;20 "- Most recently we've been studying air fryers,"
01;14;13;04 "a really popular household appliance."
01;14;16;12 There's very little known about
01;14;18;04 what comes out of an air fryer.
01;14;20;02 "The air fryer uses a very different technology"
01;14;22;12 from conventional cooking.
01;14;23;26 "There's a very large fan blowing hot air through it."
01;14;27;01 "And so we wonder if there's gonna be a different profile"
01;14;30;24 "of different compounds that might come out."
01;14;33;29 "And what we have found is that the air fryer"
01;14;36;28 "does emit more than traditional cooking."
01;14;41;00 "If you take the same recipe, if you do it either by a pan"
01;14;45;10 "or by the air fryer, we compare those two"
01;14;47;21 "and we found that air fryer generally emits more."
01;14;50;13 "But one advantage of the air fryer"
01;14;52;26 "is that you can cook with less oil."
01;14;55;08 "And so if you scale back on the oil that you use,"
01;14;59;01 "you can actually reduce what comes out of the air fryer."
01;15;02;00 "We actually already have a solution."
01;15;04;14 "We have kitchen hoods, we have fans."
01;15;07;14 "If we can improve ventilation, we don't reduce the emission,"
01;15;11;10 "but we can lower the concentration by bringing more"
01;15;15;03 "of that pollutant outside and breathe less of that."
01;15;19;01 "- It's doable, it's just understanding"
01;15;20;25 where to spend your money.
01;15;23;09 "Ideally, I want to build a tight home,"
01;15;26;08 "not just watertight, but airtight."
01;15;28;12 "One that is well insulated, one that has a correctly sized"
01;15;32;15 "HVAC system that can run long enough to dehumidify,"
01;15;36;29 a balanced ventilation system
01;15;38;27 "where it's not de-pressurizing or pressurizing the home."
01;15;42;01 "But adding all of that equipment is, I mean,"
01;15;45;06 "it's not just that the equipment costs money,"
01;15;47;17 but the labor costs money.
01;15;49;05 And oftentimes it will be crews
01;15;52;28 "that have never done this before."
01;15;54;19 "And so that will even add more costs"
01;15;56;25 "because they'll charge a little bit more"
01;15;58;15 "and then maybe I'll have to fix something"
01;16;01;10 and have someone come back out.
01;16;03;09 "So with that, it's not just money,"
01;16;04;23 "but it also complicates the whole building process."
01;16;07;21 So these are the challenges.
01;16;09;23 "- It seems like construction is a bit of a game of dominoes"
01;16;13;10 "and you wanna make sure the dominoes"
01;16;14;16 aren't falling too fast.
01;16;16;00 - That's right. (chuckles)
01;16;17;24 "- This is my first home purchase."
01;16;19;14 "I've been wanting to buy for a long time,"
01;16;22;12 "but it wasn't really till this year"
01;16;24;07 that things kind of worked out.
01;16;25;19 "I was definitely looking for a home"
01;16;27;04 "that had high performance, high energy efficiency,"
01;16;29;27 "and my energy bill is actually cheaper than it was"
01;16;33;00 "at my one bedroom apartment in Austin."
01;16;35;10 "Initially when we had the inspection done,"
01;16;37;29 "I couldn't tell that the air was even on"
01;16;39;18 "'cause it's so quiet and so subtle,"
01;16;41;08 "but the house just stays perfect temperature."
01;16;44;04 "Even when we had temperatures drop down into the 20s"
01;16;47;08 "in February, the windows, there weren't even any coldness"
01;16;51;18 "or air kind of seeping in through there."
01;16;53;12 "I just kind of set it and forget it"
01;16;55;18 and I don't have to do anything.
01;16;57;11 It's great.
01;16;58;14 "- The way that I became a builder"
01;17;01;10 "was when we were living in this neighborhood,"
01;17;03;15 "we had our first home built and we watched the process,"
01;17;06;28 but we also watched the process
01;17;08;23 "of other homes being built around us."
01;17;11;20 And not only did it look simple,
01;17;15;02 "but also we noticed a lot of, I guess, flaws."
01;17;19;07 "And I kept wondering how am I noticing these flaws"
01;17;21;17 "and these builders don't notice them and I'm not a builder."
01;17;25;11 "I mean I have some construction experience"
01;17;27;15 "but in other kinds of construction."
01;17;29;28 "And so I just kept wondering, you know,"
01;17;32;15 "why is this flashing not in front of the thing"
01;17;35;19 "that it needs to protect or why are they making a hole here"
01;17;39;29 "and it never gets sealed or protected?"
01;17;43;22 "And sure enough, these are real issues."
01;17;47;23 "It just happens that not a lot of builders,"
01;17;50;02 "at least in this area, are dealing with those issues."
01;17;54;06 "A lot of these homes, they will look nice in the end"
01;17;57;07 "and that's exactly why people don't know the difference."
01;18;01;08 "- [Grace] Performance built homes"
01;18;02;16 "and smart homes are not the same thing."
01;18;05;00 "We're cautious about any smart home systems and here's why."
01;18;09;04 "- The internet of things is, as it's often called,"
01;18;11;18 "whether it be this simple webcam that I'm looking at"
01;18;14;09 that's connected to my computer
01;18;16;10 "or this shiny home that I'm in that has, yes ceiling fans"
01;18;20;11 "that came enabled with a wifi connector in it."
01;18;25;04 "They now have HD cameras built into the televisions."
01;18;28;15 "Your fridge has operating systems on it"
01;18;31;04 that can be controlled.
01;18;32;27 "What would happen if somebody was to gain access"

01;19;18;00 "they put a lot of that back onto the customer."
01;19;20;23 "You will typically find within days of being made available"
01;19;24;02 "to the public, a security professional like myself"
01;19;26;29 "has published a blog detailing step by step"
01;19;30;12 "how they were able to overcome that security."
01;19;32;11 And you can go online right now
01;19;33;24 "and find hundreds of thousands of open webcams"
01;19;38;18 "both inside and outside of homes that are unsecured"
01;19;42;12 "and publicly broadcasting to the internet."
01;19;44;20 "The users did not set them up properly."
01;19;47;17 "They can't send the device out secure,"
01;19;49;29 "typically because the level of complexity"
01;19;53;08 "that it would then take to set these devices up"
01;19;56;23 would negate the ease of use.
01;19;58;24 So users would stop using them.
01;20;00;26 "they would need individuals like myself"
01;20;03;06 on call to go and do it.
01;20;04;26 "Unfortunately, there's not that many of us to go around."
01;20;08;20 "The cybersecurity industry currently"
01;20;10;26 "has over one million open job spots."
01;20;13;12 "When you start thinking about what could happen,"
01;20;16;12 "obviously that becomes a problem."
01;20;17;27 "Take time, think about it. Read the book."

01;20;33;25 "because the people who are trying to mitigate disasters"
01;20;37;24 are trying to do good things.
01;20;39;21 And of course the road to hell
01;20;40;24 is paved with good intentions.
01;20;42;27 "That is an example of engineering at work."
01;20;46;13 "Engineering being a series of compromises"
01;20;49;22 "because you can't have everything."
01;20;51;22 "It is portable, it is weather resistant,"
01;20;54;10 "shaped perfectly like a dome would be,"
01;20;56;26 but it's made out of fiberglass
01;20;59;03 "that's gonna be potentially sealed, like air sealed."
01;21;01;05 So it might be super airtight.
01;21;02;19 "So you might have whatever you put in there, off gassing."
01;21;04;27 "So now the air quality really suffers."
01;21;06;24 "Humidity in there is gonna be kinda a nightmare."
01;21;08;28 "You're gonna have the same problem that I had in my hotel"
01;21;10;18 "room here, which is that it's gonna cool really easily,"
01;21;12;27 "but it's not gonna dehumidify very well."
01;21;14;20 "This is not to do with homes, but here's the Florida Keys."
01;21;17;28 "And all of this is basically very shallow."
01;21;20;09 "So what they're trying to do is just drop the temperature"
01;21;23;17 "of this water going right through here"
01;21;26;18 "from 90 degrees on the surface to 80 degrees,"
01;21;29;25 "by going down to the cold water underneath it"
01;21;32;13 and bubbling that up here.
01;21;35;06 "And they're using the fact that there is a velocity"
01;21;37;29 "of the water that way to basically cool this water"
01;21;41;21 "and then that cool water will carry through"
01;21;44;11 "between the strait between Cuba and Florida."
01;21;47;18 "Potentially you could use this anywhere,"
01;21;49;05 "but I think that the idea of using the flow and the pressure"
01;21;52;27 "and the temperature, it's the same thing"
01;21;54;19 "that we're always dealing with in homes."
01;21;56;00 And basically what we do is
01;21;57;11 "of course weather systems inside of homes."
01;22;00;05 "And by the way, this would cost to deploy this"
01;22;01;27 "and change the temperature for four days."
01;22;04;16 "You're saying it would cost 674 and a half million dollars"
01;22;10;22 "and that includes all the cost of the diesel"
01;22;12;06 "and the ship rental and all that stuff for an entire season."
01;22;14;13 "But it would give you $16 returns in the disaster"
01;22;20;19 "lessening for each dollar you spend."
01;22;22;07 Isn't that crazy?
01;22;23;14 "Like the scale that we're thinking of"
01;22;25;05 "when we talk about natural disasters is just, blows my mind."
01;22;27;26 "One of the other things that makes me sad"
01;22;29;24 is thinking about the workforce.
01;22;31;09 "I believe this is like eight feet"
01;22;33;01 "by eight feet with an eight foot ceiling."
01;22;35;15 "How are you getting the ventilation?"
01;22;37;00 "'Cause the little bunk is built into a little nook"
01;22;40;02 "and they said, ""Oh, we cut a hole in the top."""
01;22;42;21 "And I was like, ""Okay, well how's the air"
01;22;44;27 getting back in to replace it?"
01;22;46;28 "And they said, ""Why are you asking so many questions?"""
01;22;49;10 "They're gonna have massive humidity problems."
01;22;51;00 "This is not a good living situation."
01;22;52;19 "Like you're putting people who are going to help people"
01;22;55;22 "into living situations that are also potentially"
01;22;57;24 "disaster prone, from a building science perspective."
01;23;00;04 So, here we are again,
01;23;03;20 "- In early 2000, you might remember that a lot"
01;23;05;21 "of envelopes were sent that had anthrax spores in them."
01;23;09;00 The federal government,
01;23;10;06 "nobody knew how to deal with that issue."
01;23;12;21 "How do you clean the building up?"
01;23;13;29 "Do you just tear the building down?"
01;23;15;24 "These giant, you know, almost million square foot buildings"
01;23;19;16 and set 'em on fire?
01;23;21;00 You know, what do you do?
01;23;22;10 "So there was a lot of research that was done"
01;23;25;05 "on what kinds of fumigants you could inject into buildings"
01;23;28;13 "that would get into all the nooks"
01;23;29;27 and crannies of the buildings,
01;23;31;05 "that would get into the HVAC system,"
01;23;33;08 "that would get into people's drawers"
01;23;35;17 "in their desks, in their offices."
01;23;38;28 "These things are still used in some places"
01;23;41;04 "after hurricanes to fumigate homes and churches"
01;23;44;14 "and schools to get rid of mold, right?"
01;23;46;22 "Same chemicals, same high levels as were used"
01;23;49;22 during the anthrax spores.
01;23;51;01 "What do they do to indoor materials?"
01;23;52;21 "And we found that they do quite a bit."
01;23;55;10 "So we found a lot of really interesting chemistry"
01;23;58;13 "involving chemicals like chlorine dioxide,"
01;24;00;25 "which is still used in the Gulf Coast"
01;24;02;19 "after hurricanes to fumigate buildings."
01;24;04;29 "And chlorine dioxide can engage in some chemistry"
01;24;07;06 "that actually leads to corrosion of wiring,"
01;24;10;13 of copper wiring.
01;24;11;19 "And it can generate some really interesting"
01;24;14;01 toxic byproducts.
01;24;15;28 "So that was one of the many chemicals we studied"
01;24;18;29 "with 24 different building materials"
01;24;21;15 "that I think really opened people's eyes"
01;24;23;11 "to the potential impacts of fumigating buildings to do good."
01;24;29;17 "But at the same time, having this byproduct,"
01;24;31;02 which is maybe not good,
01;24;35;21 "- Finding crews to work with me was a challenge."
01;24;39;09 "Initially I was on the quest to find people that care"
01;24;42;11 "and I was convinced that that's the secret ingredient."
01;24;48;15 But that's hard to do.
01;24;49;29 "No one's gonna care like I care. But that's okay."
01;24;53;07 That's okay.
01;24;54;21 "I'm looking for people that are willing to learn."
01;24;57;23 But the other thing I've learned
01;24;58;29 "is I need to listen to them as well."
01;25;00;23 Sometimes they have good ideas
01;25;03;15 and I need to consider that.
01;25;04;27 "Sometimes their ideas aren't that great,"
01;25;07;18 "but they're just stuck on it and they don't want to change."
01;25;11;20 That's okay too. I can adapt.
01;25;14;10 "And so that's what I've been doing over the years"
01;25;16;08 is adapting what I've learned
01;25;19;02 "to what people are willing to do."
01;25;21;15 "And it's become really a collaborative effort."
01;25;24;20 "I had workers walking off jobs when I was being picky"
01;25;28;10 "and I was pointing out every little detail to them."
01;25;32;06 Even on my own personal house,
01;25;34;21 "I had the framing crew tear down everything,"
01;25;38;22 "pack up their tools right in the middle of it and take off."
01;25;42;25 "I have to understand where to draw the line."
01;25;45;13 "There are mistakes I see when I come to the job site."
01;25;48;14 "I know I can point out maybe one fourth of them. (laughs)"
01;25;54;17 If I point out too many things,
01;25;55;28 "it just becomes stressful for everybody."
01;25;59;04 "In order to get those things fixed,"
01;26;01;05 "I need to wait for the right moment."
01;26;04;22 "- Many of us, and we know who we are,"
01;26;06;28 can't help trying to fix things.
01;26;08;19 It drives us.
01;26;10;04 "- And that's what keeps the world moving forward."
